The Pursuit of Teaching Excellence
From the inner-jacket:
In 1991, the University of Missouri awarded the first William T. Kemper Fellowships for Teaching Excellence. In recognizing distinguished accomplishments of faculty as educators, these fellowships have helped to greatly enhance the visibility of teaching on our campus. Indeed, the Kemper Fellowships have created an annual celebration of teaching excellence.
The Kemper Fellows want to involve their colleagues and peers from across higher education in this celebration. As we considered how to extend the celebration of excellence in teaching, we recognized the valuable resource that the Kemper Fellowships had created: a community of teaching scholars. This community is unique in the wide range of disciplines represented among the Fellows. This community is also unique in the wide range of settings in which the faculty practice the art and apply the science of teaching and learning . Kemper Fellows teach courses ranging from large-lecture, freshman general education courses to small , graduate-level seminars. They represent the full spectrum of disciplines found at a large, comprehensive land-grant university that includes professional schools of law,m medicine, and veterinary medicine
The forty-four Kemper Fellows contributing to this book have done an outstanding job of sharing their stories, ideas and methods. As editors, we chose to retain this diversity among the chapters. We think it makes the book more real and genuine and allows the work to connect with a broader group of faculty, who are engaged in teaching diverse subjects, in a wide range of settings, to students with widely differing backgrounds.
Proceeds of this book support the creation of a Kemper Fellows Endowment to support teaching excellence at Mizzou.
