THE SUMMER OF BEER AND WHISKEY is perfect spring-training reading for Cardinals fans. Edward Achorn’s sequel to FIFTY-NINE IN ’84 describes the events surrounding the founding of the Redbirds by a prominent German beer baron. No, not –that- one (he sponsored a rival team, ironically enough), but Chris von der Ahe, the colorful “Boss President” of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1882-1898. Achorn tells the tale of the National League’s first major league rival, the American Association, the travails of African-American players during the time period (including the first documented African-American major leaguer, Moses “Fleetwood” Walker) and von der Ahe’s successful efforts to reform and popularize the national pastime in what would ultimately prove to be America’s No. Baseball City.
