Ernie's Take:
Winter's Bone, by Daniel Woodrell, the inspiration for the movie that launched Jennifer Lawrence’s career, is the story of Ree Dolly; a poor, Ozarks teenager who has to take care of her two younger brothers and half-crazy mother. Her father, one of the best meth cooks in the area, has put up the family house for his bail and then disappeared. This prompts her to undertake a grim but necessary journey to find him, dead or alive, leading to a grim climax. The sharp edges and heartbreaking efficiency of the very poor are on display here in what Woodrell calls “Country Noir.” It’s not for the faint-hearted.
